The work exhibited here, Belonging, is a homage to my grandfather. My main goal with this installation is to create a space of mourning and communist remembrance, which is neither a chapel nor a monument but the countryside home where I grew up. After my grandfather passed, I learned that collecting communist objects has a second dimension—that of grief. His belongings became disputed matter between me, who wanted to save everything, and my mother, who tried to purge it all. I know that for her, those objects evoked memories she rarely talked about. Occupying an indeterminate zone, some were un-rescuable and considered junk—obsolete communist brands of soaps, shaving cream, perfumes, old-fashioned TV lamps—while others were just there: clothes, communist postcards and stamps, China tea-ware, records, electronic devices. As I grew up surrounded by most of these objects, they were reminders of my childhood as well as traces of a disappearing world that implicated me differently.
