The Goose Kinbaku, paintings and drawings by Manuel Olías
As part of the Window Show project by Stichting la Jetée (Foundation Jetty) in Amsterdam, a collection of drawings and a recent painting by Valencian artist Manuel Olías is on display on March 9th (invitees only), the Window can be seen until the end of May 2025. This Window exhibition includes a painting of a goose, as found in the parks and along the canals in Amsterdam, held around the neck by a ribbon, by something outside the frame of this painting.
This work is an allusion to the magical, urgent, sometimes pressing and choking relation between the artist and the creative process. Kinbaku (緊縛) is the Japanese word for ‘bondage’, the tight knotting of the body as a practice of voluntary surrender to domination in the field of erotic games.
The exhibition on March 09, 2025 also includes a collection of 16 subtle drawings, almost invisible sketches, showing hands and undone knots. They represent a liberation from self-imposed pressures, personal restraints and paralyzing influences – silence and inactivity induced by the artist himself or provoked by an external will. Like Duchamp, the chess player, taking an eternal time to resume the game.
Completing the exhibition is a mural drawing on one of the walls of the room, made with black permanent marker and colored pencils. A huge hand arrives from heaven, like the hand of a personal god or a higher self undoing the metaphysics of a vulgar rope. The hands on the drawings are those of the artist himself, his wrist wrapped in another ribbon, a bracelet with the motto cut out, which reads “Love always wins”.
